For those who missed 2600's announcement, the dates for the 2004 Hope conference will be July 9-11. That's all the information they gave us so far. The web page for h2k4 will most likely be http://www.h2k4.com, but as of yet that hasn't even been purchased (or so it seems)

2600 has dropped the DeCSS suit. This leaves Judge Caplains ruling which says that DeCSS is illegal (as is watching movies in any open source OS?). There is still a DeCSS case open in California.

Ford has decided to drop its appeal of the lower court that said that domains could be pointed anywhere. This is great news. In a time when so many horrible laws, acts, and ruling are being given to us (or forced upon us) this just makes my day.

I wonder how long the government can keep stripping away our freedoms, before we stop calling this the land of the free. It is clear that if 9/11 taught us anything, it is that all hackers must be stopped.

Microsoft. The name you trust for security. Well that's what Bill Gates wants anyways. He is supposedly basing bonuses this year on the secureness of the applications. They have recently put a freeze on new software, so that they can patch their current applications. They even have a new head of security. IMHO, they will never be able to secure their apps well if they are the only ones with the source code, but at least they are taking steps in the right direction.

Optyx is working on password analysis. He is analysing which rulesets are most effective in cracking passwords. To get the best statistical data, he needs anonymous password hashes, from as many machines as you have access to. A client and SSL-enabled web interface is coming soon. I am aware that the poll and chat aren't working. As I don't have root, and I don't own these files, I can not fix the permission problems. When I find Hugme on line I will get him to change the permissions for me.

We'll we're back. Sorry for any problems, but they seem to be resolved. A good deal has happened while this site has been down. Here is a short list.

2600 lost their appeal about on posting the DeCSS. 2600 has yet to announce wether they will appeal

Dmitry Sklyarov was released. The DOJ acted as if they did it, to gain his testimony, but it later appeared that no such deal was made. They seem to have just freed him, with the understanding that he may be called as a witness against his employer.

2600 won their case against Ford. This ruling basically said that linking to domains is still legal.

Again I'm sorry for being down as long as we were, but we should be back to stay!!!!

PhreakNIC5 is coming up fast. It's November 2-4. If you've never been before, I highly recommend it. If you are worried about a hotel room or making the drive up to Nashville, then sign up for the se2600 mailing list. Many people offer to split the cost of hotel rooms, and every year Hugme takes a caravan of cars from Southern Poly Tech straight to the hotel.

It seems that big brother got a very big boost on 9/11/01. The US government is trying its best to become more secure. Which seems to mean removing any reliable source of encryption, and giving hackers life sentences. Please contact your local politician, and ask them to keep a cool head when it comes to heir constituents rights. Terrorism is bad enough. Do we need our own government aiding them?

Ok if you havent heard of it yet there is a new bill being tossed around called the sssca. It is being pushed by the music and recording industry and has severe legal punishments for breaking it. It basically requires that all computers be "certified" and could spell the end for open source software. Here are a couple of links.

I wanted people to be able to vote multiple times on the poll. However, someone wanted to vote repeatedly (hopefully through a script). There were over 2000 votes for each choice. 209.51.137.114, you should be ashamed :)

Well this is getting to be a regular type post to the news section, but I found another error in the poll section. When 3 or more votes were cast at the same time, there was a possibility that it would flood the file. I fixed it as well.

AJC. There was an article in the AJC yesterday about how the code red 2 worm could be used to turn all of the infected computers into zombies. They said that was the greatest risk now. Of course the word used for the person who would make these zombie computers was "HACKER". I also was baffled that the greatest concern over a remote root exploit was a DDOS. *sigh*

There seems to be some debate as to where our next meeting will be. the 3 most prominent places are the food court at lenox mall (old location), Innovox, and the Mellow Mushroom on Peachtree Rd. If you have an opinion one way or the other, please post it either in the message board or to one of the email lists.

FIRST POST!!!!!
ok that was a joke.
As some of you can tell this is not the 404 page that was here last time you
checked it out. I asked Hugme about a week ago if I could give it a shot and
see what I could do with it. This is what I could do with it. There were
several reasons for me changing it, but the biggest one was the fact that the
page didn't work in netscape. I'm not a big netscape user. I prefer Opera,
but I felt that the page not working in netscape was pretty bad. Another
reason I changed it was that it hadn't been updated in a while (over a year
that I know of). I plan on keeping this site pretty current. (Kick me if
I start slipping). I know this page is pretty dull. No flashy animations or
heavy graphics use. I did this on purpose as well. Remember even if you are
using the newest version of flash, there are people who come here and use
lynx. I hope you enjoy what I've done. Feel free to look around, and send
any questions, comments, complaints, or accusations to MaxieZ
